These Terms and Conditions apply to purchases of physical books from the Alef Books website. By placing an order, you agree to these terms.
1. About us

2. Orders
When you place an order, you are making an offer to purchase the books in your basket. Your order is accepted when we send an order-confirmation or dispatch email.
We may decline or cancel an order if a book is unavailable, payment cannot be authorised, the delivery address is outside the destinations we serve, or there is an obvious error in the price or description. If payment has already been taken, it will be refunded.
You must provide accurate contact, payment and delivery information.
3. Books and availability
We make reasonable efforts to describe and display our books accurately. Colours and appearance may vary slightly depending on your screen.
All books are subject to availability. We may limit quantities or discontinue a book before an order has been accepted.
4. Prices and payment
Prices are displayed in the currency shown on the website and may be changed before an order is placed. A price will not change after we have accepted the order.
The total price of the books and any applicable delivery charge will be shown before you complete your purchase.
Payments are processed securely by the third-party payment providers available at checkout.
5. Book subscriptions
The price, frequency, contents and any minimum duration of a book subscription will be displayed before purchase.
Unless stated otherwise, subscriptions renew automatically at the selected frequency, and payment will be taken using the payment method provided.
You may cancel future renewals through your account, where available, or by emailing info@alefbooks.co.uk. Cancellation must be received before the next renewal payment is processed. Cancellation will not affect an order already processed or dispatched, although applicable statutory cancellation rights remain available.
We will provide any renewal notices required by applicable law.
6. Delivery destinations
We deliver to a range of international destinations. The destinations currently available, delivery methods, estimated delivery times and charges will be shown at checkout.
We will deliver within the period stated at checkout or, if no period has been agreed, within 30 days of accepting the order, unless circumstances outside our reasonable control prevent this.
The books remain our responsibility until they are delivered to you or to a person identified by you to receive them.
7. Free UK delivery
Free standard delivery is available for eligible orders delivered to a UK address where the value of the books, after discounts and excluding delivery charges, is £50 or more.
Free delivery is conditional on the value of the books retained following any partial cancellation or return remaining at or above £50.
If a partial return reduces the value of the books retained below £50, we may deduct from the refund the standard delivery charge that would have applied to the retained books when the order was placed.
This deduction does not apply where books are returned because they are faulty, damaged, incorrect or not as described.
8. EU taxes and customs charges
For this section, an “EU order” means an order delivered to an address within the European Union.
For EU orders where the value of the books, after discounts and excluding delivery charges, is €70 or more, Alef Books will arrange delivery on a Delivered Duty Paid (DDP) basis. Alef Books will be responsible for import VAT, customs duties and mandatory customs-clearance or carrier-handling charges associated with importing the parcel.
If an EU customer receiving a qualifying DDP order is unexpectedly asked to pay an import charge, they should contact info@alefbooks.co.uk promptly and provide evidence of the charge.
EU orders with a book value below €70 will be sent on a Delivered at Place (DAP) basis. The recipient will be responsible for paying any import VAT, customs duties, customs-clearance fees or carrier-handling charges imposed upon or before delivery. These charges are not included in the amount paid to Alef Books.
Where an order is displayed or paid for in another currency, eligibility for the €70 offer will be determined using the euro value or exchange rate applied at checkout when the order is placed.
Customers outside the UK and EU are responsible for any import taxes, customs duties, clearance fees or carrier charges imposed by the destination country unless checkout expressly states that delivery is DDP.
9. Cancelling an online purchase
You may cancel all or part of an online order by notifying us within 14 days beginning on the day after you receive the books.
If one order is delivered in separate parcels on different days, the cancellation period begins on the day after you receive the final parcel. For a subscription involving regular delivery of books, the cancellation period for the subscription begins on the day after you receive the first delivery.
To cancel, email info@alefbooks.co.uk with a clear statement that you wish to cancel. Please include your name, order number and the books concerned. You may use the model cancellation form at the end of these terms, but you are not required to do so.
You must return the books without undue delay and no later than 14 days after notifying us of the cancellation.
10. Return postage and condition
For cancellations made because you have changed your mind, you are responsible for the direct cost of returning the books.
Returned books must be unused and in a clean, resalable condition, except for handling reasonably necessary to inspect them. You must take reasonable care of the books while they are in your possession.
We may reduce the refund to reflect any loss in value caused by use, damage, marking, writing, creasing, staining, missing components or handling beyond what would normally be permitted when examining a book in a shop.
These conditions do not limit your statutory rights where a book is faulty, damaged, incorrect or not as described.
Please contact info@alefbooks.co.uk before returning books. We will provide the applicable returns address.
11. Refunds following cancellation
We will refund the price paid for eligible returned books using the original payment method unless otherwise agreed.
No processing or administration fee will be deducted from a refund required by law. This does not prevent us from making any deduction expressly permitted under these terms or applicable law, including a deduction for loss of value caused by excessive handling.
We may withhold the refund until we receive the books or you provide evidence that they have been returned, whichever occurs first. The refund will then be made within the period required by applicable law.
If you cancel an entire order for which you paid a delivery charge, we will refund the cost of the least expensive standard delivery option available for that order. Additional charges for express, premium or enhanced delivery will not be refunded.
If standard delivery was provided free of charge, there is no original delivery charge to refund.
Original delivery charges will not normally be refunded where only part of an order is returned, except where required by law.
12. Damaged, faulty or incorrect books
If a book arrives damaged, faulty or incorrect, please contact us within seven days of delivery, where reasonably possible. Please provide your order number, details of the problem and photographs where available.
The seven-day reporting request helps us investigate delivery problems promptly. It does not limit your statutory rights.
Where a book is damaged, faulty, incorrect or not as described, we will provide the remedy required by applicable law and cover reasonable return costs where legally required.
13. Intellectual property
The text, images, logos and other content on the Alef Books website belong to Alef Books or its licensors and are protected by applicable intellectual-property laws. They may not be reproduced or used without permission except where permitted by law.
14. Liability
We are responsible for losses that are a foreseeable result of our breach of these terms or our failure to use reasonable care and skill.
We are not responsible for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable or for business losses arising from purchases made primarily for commercial purposes.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability where doing so would be unlawful, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation. Nothing in these terms limits your statutory consumer rights.
15. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The terms in force when an order is placed will apply to that order.
16. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
If you are a consumer living outside England and Wales, this choice of law does not deprive you of any mandatory consumer protections provided by the law applicable in the country where you live.
The courts with jurisdiction under applicable consumer law may hear any dispute arising from these terms.
